Loc Removal

Choosing to remove your locs is just as valid and personal as the decision to install them. Loc removal is carried out with patience, care and respect for your natural hair, with the aim of preserving as much length and integrity as possible throughout the process.

Consultation

+

Every loc removal begins with a consultation. I'll assess the age, condition, size and overall structure of your locs to determine whether they're suitable for removal.

We'll also discuss your expectations, how much hair can realistically be preserved, the time involved, and whether multiple appointments are likely to be needed. Every set of locs is different, so understanding what we're working with is an important first step before beginning the process.

The Removal Process

+

Loc removal is a slow, strand-by-strand process that focuses on preserving as much of your natural hair as possible.

Rather than cutting the locs off, I gradually unlock each loc using a combination of removal techniques and specialised tools, including crochet tools, brushes and combs. Each loc is carefully separated a little at a time until the hair can be gently combed and brushed out.

Because every loc is worked on individually, the process requires patience and can take many hours depending on the age, size and condition of your locs.

03

What to Expect

+

Loc removal is very different from cutting your locs off. The goal is to preserve as much of your natural hair and length as possible, but some hair loss should be expected during the process. Hair naturally sheds every day, and much of that shed hair remains trapped inside the loc until it's removed.

Older or tightly compacted locs are generally more time consuming to remove and will require multiple appointments. Every set of locs responds differently, which is why realistic expectations are discussed during your consultation.

04

After Removal

+

Once your locs have been removed, your hair will usually benefit from a little extra care.

I recommend thoroughly washing and conditioning your hair, keeping it moisturised, and handling it gently while it settles back into its natural state.

Depending on how long you've had locs, your hair may feel different at first, but with regular care it will gradually become easier to manage.

Suitability for Removal

Not every set of locs can be removed and not every client is a suitable candidate. Removal depends on several factors, including:

  • Age of the locs
  • Size and maturity
  • Hair condition
  • How tightly the locs have compacted over time
  • Previous maintenance and repair history

A consultation allows me to assess your locs and explain what's realistically possible before booking your appointment.

Appointment Duration

Loc removal is one of the most time intensive services I offer. The length of your appointment depends on:

  • Number of locs
  • Hair length
  • Hair density
  • Age of the locs
  • Size of the locs
  • Overall condition and how tightly they've matured

Some removals can be completed in a single session, while others require multiple appointments spread over several days. This allows the process to be carried out carefully without rushing or causing unnecessary stress to your hair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why choose loc removal instead of cutting my locs off?

If your goal is to return to loose natural hair while keeping as much of your length as possible, loc removal is a good alternative to cutting your locs off. While some hair loss is normal and should be expected, careful removal often preserves significantly more hair than simply cutting the locs at the root.

Does loc removal hurt?

It can be uncomfortable at times, especially with older or tightly compacted locs. I work slowly and carefully throughout the process, using professional removal techniques to make the experience as comfortable as possible.

Will I lose hair?

Yes. Some hair loss is completely normal during loc removal. Hair naturally sheds every day, but because it's trapped inside the loc, it doesn't fall away as it normally would. As the loc is removed, that accumulated shed hair is released. Some additional breakage may also occur during the process, particularly with older or tightly compacted locs. My goal is always to preserve as much healthy hair as possible while being realistic about what can be achieved.

Can every set of locs be removed?

Not always. Some locs are simply too mature or compacted to be removed safely without excessive breakage. During your consultation, I'll assess your locs and let you know whether removal is a suitable option.

Why does loc removal take so long?

Every loc has to be separated strand by strand. Unlike cutting locs off, removal involves patiently unlocking the hair while trying to preserve as much of it as possible. Because of this, the process naturally takes much longer.

Your next step.

Removal does not always mean cutting your locs off. Let’s take a look at your locs together and discuss your options for removal. Depending on the condition of your locs, I’ll guide you through what’s realistically possible for your hair.
