Loc Installation (Natural Hair)

Every installation begins with a consultation. We talk about your lifestyle, hair history and what you're looking to achieve. I assess your hair, scalp condition, discuss loc size, density, parting, length preferences and whether extensions are the right choice for you. This helps me understand your vision and plan an approach that supports long term loc health.

Once we've agreed on the best plan, we'll schedule your installation.

I use the crochet method to install locs. It's a product-free, wax-free technique that creates a neat, well formed base from day one.

Each section is carefully parted before a small crochet hook is used to weave your natural hair together, forming the loc. As the loc is created, the hook pulls loose hairs into the centre of the loc, helping it hold its shape. This creates a clean finish while allowing your locs to continue maturing naturally.

Sectioning is one of the most important parts of the installation. Depending on your hair type and the look you're aiming for, I may use square, brick, semi-circular or custom sections. The goal is to create balanced sections that suit your hair and provide the best possible start for healthy locs.

Extensions are optional and can be added to give your locs extra length, fullness, or help achieve a specific look from the start.

I offer two methods of installing extensions:

1. Loose Hair Extensions (Recommended)

During your installation, loose extension hair is crocheted directly into your natural hair using the same crochet method as the rest of your locs. This creates a seamless blend from root to tip, making the locs feel lighter and look more natural.

Because the extension hair is woven throughout the entire length of the loc, the weight is distributed evenly instead of being held at a single attachment point. This makes the locs more durable over time, which is why it's the method I recommend to most clients.

2. Pre-made Loc Extensions

These are fully formed loc extensions that are custom-made before your appointment and attached during the installation. They're a great option if you're looking for an instant, finished look or a very specific style.

Since the extension is attached at one point, it may require more care over time, especially with longer or heavier extensions. Depending on your hair and lifestyle, occasional repairs or reattachment may be needed.

During your consultation, we'll discuss which method is best suited to your hair, as well as your preferred length, thickness, colour, and overall look.

Freshly crocheted locs will feel firm, neat and slightly stiff. This is completely normal.

Over the weeks and months that follow, your locs will gradually soften, loosen slightly, and develop more movement as they settle into their natural shape. This is all part of the locking process.

No two sets of locs develop in exactly the same way. Factors like your hair type, texture, lifestyle, and how you care for them all play a role. That's part of what makes every set of locs unique.

Yes, you can wash your locs. In fact, regular washing is an important part of keeping your scalp clean and your locs healthy.

I'll guide you through how to wash, dry and care for your locs at home. Basic maintenance includes washing regularly, drying your locs thoroughly, separating the roots when needed, and occasional palm rolling to help keep them tidy.

I'll also provide personalised aftercare advice based on your hair type and where you are in your loc journey.

Loc installation is just the beginning. As your hair grows, new growth and loose hairs need regular maintenance to keep your locs neat, healthy and well shaped.

During a maintenance session, I use the crochet method to weave new growth and loose hairs back into the loc. I also tidy the roots, maintain your original sections, and address any weak spots before they become bigger issues.

Regular maintenance helps your locs stay clean, strong and well maintained while supporting the natural locking process.
